In , using the profits from his store, Captain Schreiner decided to invest in land and livestock. He purchased a ranch, which would later be known as the Y.

Along with purchasing the ranch he also purchased the Y. Ever since that time the Y. Ranch has been synonymous with the Schreiner family. Schreiner would make Kerrville the wool and mohair capital for many years. In Schreiner divided his holdings, which included , acres of land, among his eight children.

Aime Charles Schreiner received the mercantile store, Gustav received the ranching interests, Louis received the bank, and his daughters received land in Kerr County. The turn of the century was approaching and Kerrville needed a new bank, one with new technology, including a new safe. For the first year a bank was in operation, the bank employees stored the money under a loose floorboard in the bank until they got a safe. The Chas. Schreiner Bank was located across the street from the store.

Captain Schreiner was highly involved in his community, donating money to schools, churches, road improvements and public endeavors. In , the first students arrived and the school has grown and evolved over the years. In the military school was discontinued and Schreiner Institute became Schreiner College, a two-year junior college and in the school became a four-year liberal arts college.

On February 9, , Captain Schreiner passed away. At his death Schreiner held many positions in Kerr County. His legacy continues through his unending generosity. At the edge of town, going toward Camp Verde Hwy. It is the final resting place of more than 30 former Texas Rangers. There is no other known cemetery that contains that many Texas Rangers.

He resigned from the Rangers in in Kerr County and died on March 1, , at the age of Sowell was a native Texan, born in in Seguin. He took part in the campaign against the Wichita Indians in As a ranger he scouted, trailed and participated in Indian fights, which he later recorded in his writings. He died in Center Point in , at the age of His books are classics for the study of early Texas and can still be found at the Kerrville Public Library.

Jimmie Rodgers was born on September 8, in Meridian, Mississippi, the youngest of three boys. His mother died when he was very young, and for the next few years Rodgers lived with many different relatives; eventually moving in with his father, Aaron Rodgers.

Though a few Spanish missions existed in Texas, Kerr County was overlooked, aside from one naming the Guadalupe River. Only a handful of Mexican troops passed through the county as they attempted to defend nearby San Antonio from Native Americans. The first European settlement in Kerr County was established in , at present-day Kerrville.

A group of mainly German and other European settlers led by Joshua D. Apache raiding parties made the area too dangerous to settle, and the original group left, only to return two years later, calling the place Brownsborough and building sawmills and other industry along the river. One of the more unusual tales from Kerr County history happened before it became its own county. The United States Army sought a heartier option than horses to supply outposts in the American Southwest desert.

They thought camels would answer the question, and Camp Verde in what would become Kerr County was where the camels would breed and train before being sent out west.

This would become the failed U. Camel Corps. For an army accustomed to horses, the transition proved too difficult, and the Civil War interrupted the experiment. Some of the camels escaped, and their descendants may still be seen wandering in the American Southwest. Brown opted to name the county for James Kerr, which changed the name of the county seat from Brownsborough to Kerrville, as it remains today. Originally, the land was a part of Bexar County before breaking off into its own area.

On April 14, , Alonso De Leon — , Spanish explorer and governor, began exploring westward in Texas and discovered a river of rare beauty lined with giant cypress trees, native walnut and pecan trees. During the mid-eighteenth century, Spanish military units traversed the area while defending San Antonio from Apache attacks, but it was not until the mids that the area was settled.

Joshua D. Brown, born in Kentucky in , came to Texas in In , Brown was living in Gonzales when he became interested in a new industry: the making of cypress shingles. He led a party of 10 men up the Guadalupe River and in they selected a site near a large spring in what is now Kerrville.

Here they developed one of the first shingle camps in the territory and remained and worked for several months until the Apache presence in the area became troublesome and Brown and his men were driven from the area.
