As these letters from the past continue to appear, Emilie escapes further into this mysterious alternate reality where sisterhoods are formed, romance between female inmates blossoms, striped wallpaper writhes with ghosts, and highly intellectual rats speak the Queen's English. The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls blurs harsh reality and magical historical fantasy whilst issuing a scathing critique of society's treatment of women and the mental health care industry's treatment of its patients.
Painful to the point of distraction. Potentially if I read it myself, but this is my entertainment for commuting. I cannot even focus on the story. The performance of this book is outstanding and leaves you on edge. Bravo Emilie Bravo. I had anxiety listening to the author, but not in a good suspenseful anxiety type of way.
I stuck through the story, and almost wish I hadn't. This book was a masterpiece made only more thrilling and tangible through the voice of Emilie Autumn. Anyone who has ever dealt with trauma, sexism, grief, or hospitalization will find this book either a little too close to home or absolutely validating and cathartic. Personally, I loved this story. It is groundbreaking.
Emilie Autumn has done amazing things with this book! I love her music, and this book had drawn me in instantly! The characters, the music, the dialogue. How she hints to songs she has wrote. If you enjoy her music and have not read her book. I highly recommend it. So much talent singer song writer and author of this amazing novel! I will be listening to this one over and over. My heart is filled with emotion.
Truly an Audible experience! Impossible to release for a moment; the narrator's intensity is only paralleled by the author's magnificent tale of courage, woe, and ultimate heartbreak. Although I have never been institutionalized, I have been dealing with mental illness all my life. This book was amazingly detailed and although I was genuinely concerned for Emilie and her experience not just with being institutionalized but with her experience with her mental illnesses as well, I really loved that she managed to tell two separate stories full of vivid imagery.
No spoilers here! You must read! Some parts were actually hard to listen to because I am a MDD and GAD which in this book she makes some statements that hit very close to home. I love this woman and the feeling of unity she creates through her characters as well as the shear terror and agony is able to dictate with the same vigor. I applaud you Emilie Autumn and all you are! I loved every single second though I was disappointed that Miss Lucy who I have personified on a game and feel extremely close to was not in the book.
I love this book. I've actually gone through it a few times. I love the fact that EA reads it and sings in it. I'm a huge fan of Emilie's work and the novel itself, but the audiobook is definitely amateur in nature; Emilie is not a skilled narrator, and her alternations between her natural voice and attempts at an English accent are jarring and a little jumpy, however not without their charms, and it's clear how much of a passion project this is for Autumn; a lot of love has gone into the creation of this experience.
There are some lovely creative elements with the voice acting; for example, Emilie performs one of her songs in the latter half of the novel with piano accompaniment. I can see however why the voice acting makes this audiobook unlistenable for some. The novel is a scathing criticism of the mental health system and gives an eye opening insight into some of its failings, though readers must be aware that it is at times very insensitive to the plight of other people with mental illness, and could definitely be triggering to those who have suffered with eating disorders, suicidal thoughts or self harm.
Heavy feminist themes will speak to many readers, though readers should be aware that this story is very, very dark, with the female inmates of the Victorian asylum suffering every injustice imaginable at the hands of their tormentors. The sisterly bonds developed by these characters are the real heart of the piece.
I enjoyed this unique novel and would recommend it as a fantasy to those who are interested in Victoriana; providing they can stomach the miseries within. Couldn't get through more than a few minutes, the narration is terrible. We claim no credit for any images posted unless stated otherwise. Prior to June of , everyone speculated Autumn had been hospitalized sometime before the release of Opheliac, perhaps around She talks a nurse into allowing her one of her books and a crayon, in which she dictates her life in the margins of the pages.
She is eventually transferred to a hospital ward reserved for the long-time patients as there is no room for her in the short-term wards. There she is allowed a spiral bound notebook and a pen she must check in and out of the nurse's station every morning and night.
The doctors suspect she has an eating disorder and detain her for much longer than her expected 3 days. After a time she begins to find scraps of paper shoved into her spiral-bound notebook. These are the "Asylum Letters" that contain the account of a Victorian-English girl by the name "Emily" Emilie refers to her as Emily-with-a-y for clarification , who has been incarcerated in an insane asylum , despite not actually being insane. When The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls became a work in progress is unclear, but as early as Autumn's concert performances had began to take shape around the contents within the book.
The release of Autumn's 4 o'Clock EP acted as the very first of many promotions for the book, as it contained the first audio excerpt of the story. The book was in continuous development during Autumn's time with Trisol Records. In , the book was delayed due to technical problems. Emilie somehow lost a substantial part of her book's files.
It included:. However, due to printing problems, the VIP holders could not have the books delivered to them at the concer. It was instead promised that Autumn would autograph them when they arrived at her home and that she would ship them out herself.
It was assumed that the VIP holders would still get their books before their public release at the end of Unfortunately, due to poor management on Autumn's and her management's behalf, the books for the VIP holders were not sent out until late and early long after the book had gone public.
Much to the fans' disappointment and despite EA's claims that she was autographing the books via a Twitter post, the books arrived unsigned. To make up for this, Autumn and her friend, Queen fLee, sent out autographed sticker book plates that the VIP holders could put in their books at a later date. The book was thrice delayed to fans who preordered the book through Autumn's former webshop run through her record , The Omega Order. Due to printing and distribution problems, this date was pushed back until November 10, Due to continued problems, the book was then again pushed back to December 15, When the bundles were first received, the tote bag was printed with a different design than was advertised; many founds this grounds for a return and bought their books separately at a lower price.
The novel has been sold through The Asylum Emporium since its release and had a brief shelf life on the Omega Order's website and the Mamstore.
